PANZOS: 25 Years Later

Opening Reception: Thursday, July 12th from 7-9PM

Panzós: 25 Years Later tells the story of small Guatemalan town (Panzós) and a large Canadian mining corporation (Inco) that shared an area of the continent for almost half a century. The exhibition will feature original painting, installations and descriptive banners, as well as portrait, journalistic and forensic photography. The artist will be present for the opening and special events.

Screening of the film Sipakapa no se vende (Sipakapa is not for sale) documenting the community consultation process in a region of Guatemala affected by Canadian mining activities.  Discussion will follow.

 Thursday, July 26, 7-10PM
The Khyber, 1st floor
Screening of the First Voices Project film, documenting experiences of an aboriginal youth exchange project between Atlantic Canada and Latin America, including discussion and possible performances. 

Monday, July 30th, 12-1PM

Marlon Garcia Arriaga will talk about his vocation as an artist working for justice and the experiences that led him to create the Panzos exhibit.

 Tuesday, July 31st, 7-9pm

Letter-writing night: get together to write letters to Canadian government and embassy officials as well as Canadian mining companies (such as Goldcorp and Skye Resources) to encourage implementation of national recommendations for stronger corporate social responsibility of Canadian companies operating overseas.  Drinks and snacks will be available.

The tour is coordinated by members of the Maritimes-Guatemala Breaking the Silence Network and is part of the Atlantic Regional Solidarity Network's Mining the Connections Campaign.
