Overview:
Khyber Kids are reaching out!  This year’s summer camps program is A Community Based Project.  The focus is on how we can interact and engage with our communities through art.  Each of the five themed weeks will explore traditional and non- traditional techniques of art making in a variety of mediums. Through fieldtrips and visiting artist workshops, combined with fun and exciting activities at the Khyber, the group will make art to integrate into public space.  Documentation of the camps will begin an archive that will grow with the Khyber Kids.

Camp Descriptions:

Interested in how animations, movies and T.V. shows are made?  Come and learn the processes involved in their production. This is your chance to take a look behind the scenes at two of the largest production studios in Halifax. Throughout the camp you will develop your own characters, focus on body movement and perform for the camera to create a series of short animations!

The city is full of inspiration! Look around, what do you see? Join us in a weeklong investigation of the urban environment we live in.  On drawing fieldtrips we will explore animal life under the conditions of an ever- changing city landscape.  Learn experimental painting and drawing techniques using natural materials and create artwork that will be displayed in a public space!

Interested in puppets?  Join the team in producing a puppet show from scratch!  Learn how to make different kinds of puppets, backgrounds, props, and most importantly we will create a story to tell with them.  Experience the different roles involved in making a puppet show happen, and take it into the community to perform for an audience!

Mixed Media?  Discover how a wide range of materials can be used together to make awesome art!  Learn how drawing, collage and mapping techniques can be transferred into the computer to make digital artwork. Explore how we are now preserving information in a digital age on fieldtrips to different archival spaces!

Get your hands dirty! Experiment with traditional and non- traditional sculpture techniques using materials that come from the earth.  On fieldtrips we will experience
How impermanent these earth materials really are, and begin to see how everything we use is made from these basic elements. Build intriguing sculpture to see how they transform or disappear back into the environment!
